Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus is considered one of the most significant infectious diseases in the livestock industry worldwide due to its high prevalence, persistence and clinical consequences.
BVDV infection has a wide manifestation of clinical signs including fertility issues, milk drop, pyrexia, diarrhea, and fetal infection.^[9] Occasionally, a severe acute form of BVD may occur. These outbreaks are characterized by thrombocytopenia with high morbidity and mortality. However, clinical signs are frequently mild and infection insidious, recognized only by BVDV's immunosuppressive effects perpetuating other circulating infectious diseases (particularly scours and pneumonias).

Principle

The Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Antibody Rapid Test is based on sandwich lateral flow immunochromatographic assay. The test device has a testing window for the observation of assay running and result reading. The testing window has an invisible T (test) zone and a C (control) zone before running the assay. When the treated sample was applied into the sample hole on the device, the liquid will laterally flow through the surface of the test strip and react with the pre-coated BVDV antigens. If there are BVDV antibodies in the specimen, a visible T line will appear. The C line should always appear after a sample is applied, which indicates a valid result.

Test Procedure

 

• Collect cattle's fresh whole blood, and get the serum or plasma specimen for use. Immediately apply the testing once collected the specimen.
• Allow all materials, including specimen and test device, recover to 15-25ºC before running the assay.
• Take out the test device from the foil pouch and place it horizontally.
• Using the disposable dropper to place 1 drop (approx. 40μL) of the prepared specimen into the sample hole "S" of the test device. Then drop 2 drops (approx. 80μL) of the assay buffer into the sample hole immediately.
• Interpret the result in 5-10 minutes. Result after 15 minutes is considered as invalid.

Interpretation Of Result

• Positive: The presence of both "C" line and zone "T" line, no matter T line is clear or vague. The density of color T line is related with the level of BVDV antibody titer of the specimen.
• Strong signal is explained as high titer and vaccination should not be carried.
• Weak signal is explained as low titer. Vaccination might not be necessary right now. It is suggested to be re-checked the antibodies few days later.
• Negative: Only clear C line appears. No T line.
• No signal is explained as the level of antibody titer is lower than protective limit.
• Invalid: No colored line appears in C zone. No matter if T line appears. Repeat the testing at once.
