Short Introduction

Feline calicivirus is a virus that is an important cause of upper respiratory infections and oral disease in cats. This virus infects cats throughout the world and can cause disease in both domestic and exotic cat species.


Calicivirus causes the typical typical clinical signs of an upper respiratory infection involving the nose and throat such as sneezing, nasal congestion, conjunctivitis (inflammation of the membranes lining the eyelids), and discharge from the nose or eyes. Cats with a calicivirus infection often develop ulcers on the tongue, hard palate, gums, lips, or nose.  Other non-specific signs of an upper respiratory infection include anorexia, lethargy, fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and squinting.

Principle

The Feline Calicivirus Antibody Rapid Test is based on sandwich lateral flow immunochromatographic assay. The test card has a testing window for the observation of assay running and result reading. The testing window has an invisible T (test) zone and a C (control) zone before running the assay. When the treated sample was applied into the sample hole on the device, the liquid will laterally flow through the surface of the test strip and react with the pre-coated FCV recombinant antigens. If there are FCV antibodies in the specimen, a visible T line will appear. The C line should always appear after a sample is applied, which indicates a valid result. By this means, the device can indicate the presence of FCV antibodies in the specimen.




Test Procedure

-Allow all materials, including specimen and test device, recover to 15-25ºC before running the assay.

-Take out the test device from the foil pouch and place it horizontally.

-Drop 3 drops of the serum or plasma specimen into the sample hole "S" of the test device.

-Interpret the result in 10 minutes. Result after 15 minutes is considered as invalid.

 

Interpretation Of Result

• The presence of "C" line indicates a valid result. Read the result by comparing the color intensity of the "T" line with the standard color reference "compares the color card". The V.N. titers of canine distemper antibodies are corresponding with the color intensity grades.

• Positive (+): The presence of both "C" line and zone "T" line. T line at G3 is considered as standard positive. T line < G3, is weak positive and indicates low FCV antibody level. T line around G4-G5, is strong positive. T line > G6, is very strong positive, indicates a contact with virus recently or in infection.
• Negative (-): Clear C line appears. No T line, or T line is weaker than G1. It indicates very low FCV titer. Failed immunization may happen.   
• Invalid: No colored line appears in C zone.
